Our History
Expanding Products & Services Over Time

Erie Forge and Steel (EFS) tapped its initial heat on May 17, 1918. Its original mission was to supply forgings in support of the nation’s military and defense efforts. Early products included gun barrels, cannons, large crankshafts, and steam engines. EFS soon became the number one supplier of propulsion shafting for U.S. Navy warships—a distinction it still holds today.
In addition to these forged components, EFS operated a foundry that supplied propellers and shaft struts for these same vessels. This foundry, however, closed in 1976.

In 1990, employees formed an ESOP and purchased the company. EFS continued its core business while expanding its capabilities to utilize immense melting and forging capacity, becoming a leader in the supply of steel ingots and semi-forged products.

In 2001, EFS became a wholly owned subsidiary of WHEMCO Inc. and ceased all melting and forging operations. The company refocused its business and reaffirmed its commitment to the nation’s defense industrial base as the premier propulsion shafting supplier to the United States Navy. In addition to supplying new shafts, EFS is also the leading non-Navy facility for the repair and refurbishment of main propulsion shafting for both nuclear and non-nuclear vessels.
